Magnesium Oil

Magnesium supplement.

Magnesium oil is not really an oil. It is called that because it feels slightly oily to the touch, but it is in fact a concentrated solution of magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) dissolved in water, in this case sea water, so as well as a high magnesium concentration it carries an extraordinarily high mineral content.

I collect this product myself from salt flats on the Mediterranean at the end of the summer, when most of the water has evaporated and its concentration of magnesium and minerals is at its highest. I collect it following a specific technique to avoid picking up surface microplastics and metals from the bottom. It goes through no purification process whatsoever.

Magnesium plays a key role in the body’s energy balance and in more than 325 enzymatic reactions. Just as the body needs water, the daily presence of this element is essential, since the body cannot synthesise it. It is widely accepted today that the modern diet does not provide enough of it and that this shortfall should be supplemented, as many conditions are linked to a lack of magnesium.

Magnesium in chloride salt form has good bioavailability: it is well absorbed and can be used to correct deficiencies. It is important to take it diluted, as taking it neat may cause diarrhoea. In people with normal kidney function, the kidneys remove any excess magnesium. Those with kidney failure, however, should only take magnesium supplements under medical supervision.

450 mL amber glass bottle.

Hypersaline water, sodium-magnesium chloride, with an extraordinarily high mineral content (in the order of 390 g/L of dissolved salts).

  • 1 dessertspoon diluted in 250 ml of water. It should taste pleasant, like a broth. If it does not, dilute with more water. Take 2-3 times a day. The most important dose is the one before going to sleep.
  • Ideal for cooking. Use one dessertspoon to salt your dishes (especially stews and casseroles). Then add salt to taste.
