Lime blossom flowers from the Liébana valley.

Gathering lime blossom is a tradition in Liébana. The women here treasure this work for the sheer pleasure it gives them. It is harvested in summer, when its aroma is intoxicating and seductive, and the flowers are stripped from the branches in company, to the sound of songs or good conversation, in a pleasant warm breeze. The work takes us a long time, because we select only the bracts bearing the flowers of this leafy tree, so as to offer you a product of superior quality.

It makes an infusion of a light orange colour with a pleasant aroma, matched by its sweet, fruity, gentle flavour. Lime blossom is one of the most common infusions in our homes and it brings us a range of benefits. Whether to sleep better or simply to enjoy its deep flavour, it is well worth knowing everything this simple infusion can do for us.

THE PROPERTIES OF LIME BLOSSOM

Its striking, characteristic scent comes from the farnesol present in the lime tree. It is also rich in tannins, mucilage and flavonoids, and together these elements bring about one of its most appreciated qualities: relaxing and calming the body. Lime blossom infusion is recommended for people who feel nervous and need to calm down, and also for those who suffer from insomnia. It is commonly used as a sedative, to ease headaches or to soothe a persistent cough.

It can also relieve cold symptoms, which makes it a favourite in winter, when the cold and a dip in our defences catch up with us. It warms us up and helps leave behind the heaviest symptoms of a cold, such as coughing or a sore throat. It also has an antispasmodic action, which reduces period pain, muscle knots and colic, so we can get through those moments with less discomfort while enjoying the lovely aroma and flavour of this popular remedy.

Finally, we can benefit from its diuretic effect, which helps reduce fluid retention and feel better. It also increases perspiration, which contributes to eliminating toxins.

Lime blossom taken to help sleep should be used in moderation, as it may cause nausea or a feeling of heaviness. People who are allergic to lime tree should not drink the infusion under any circumstances. The recommended amount is two cups a day. So, interesting as its benefits are, it should be used with good sense to make sure it does more good than harm.
