WINTER Botanical Formulation
Let us devote a few moments to our kidneys, the Water element, like winter.
During the winter months all beings enter a state of rest. Just as the rivers and lakes freeze and the snow falls, this is a time of year when energy decreases until it lies dormant; it is the season in which we must care for the kidneys, since they are the place where Essential Energy is stored. By strengthening the energy of the kidney we nourish the bones, the marrow and the brain (synovial and spinal fluids both belong to the Water element).
All the body’s fluids have a common origin: the water of the kidney, or the alchemists’ “Mother Water”; the rest are transformations undergone by the Mother Water as it meets the energies of the different organs. The fluids are then formed in the kidneys, the organs in which the final purification of the digestive process takes place. Here the last harmful substances are separated from the blood (to be expelled through the urine), along with the Mother Water which, thanks to the action of the bladder, will be distributed to every cell to nourish it. Under the specific action of the cells of each organ, the water of the kidneys is transformed into different watery humours, classified as physiological or pathological.
In the liver, the mother water is transformed into tears; in the heart, into sweat; in the spleen-pancreas, into saliva; in the lungs, into nasal fluid; in the kidneys, into seminal fluid and vaginal secretions.
The kidneys, the bladder and the lungs are responsible for the journey of the body’s fluids; if any of these three organs is not working properly, disturbances will occur in the secretion or elimination of body fluids, giving rise to oedema.
Body fluids coexist in mutual support with energy and blood. When they are deficient, blood and energy also weaken. We can see this when we suffer from excessive perspiration, diarrhoea or vomiting. In these cases the body fluid becomes exhausted: blood and energy are affected and the person shows circulatory disorders, palpitations and freezing limbs. Likewise, after a haemorrhage, symptoms such as a dry mouth, scant urine and constipation reveal the exhaustion of body fluid.
The energy of winter is Yin, governed by an element: water; an organ: the kidneys; a system: the genitourinary system; a viscus: the bladder; a sense: hearing; a structure: the bones, the teeth, the marrow and the hair; an emotion: fear; a colour: black; a taste: salty; an excretion: saliva; and a climate: cold.
Horsetail: antioxidant and diuretic. It is used to treat kidney stone problems. It reduces oedema.
Goldenrod: tones the urinary tract and detoxifies the kidneys.
Ash: contains flavonoids (rutin, quercetin), polyphenols, mannitol, malic acid, abundant tannins and coumarin heterosides in the bark. It is credited with diuretic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-rheumatic, antipyretic, astringent, venotonic and healing virtues.
Birch bark and leaves: diuretic, cleansing and a urinary antiseptic.
Parsley: removes toxins and excess water from the body through the urine and the kidneys, and also helps to expel stones.
Made with the Moon in Libra, the climate that governs our whole renal system.
